Just announced: yet another movie based on a children’s book. Seems like a new one pops up every week, doesn’t it? But I’m not complaining, because this one is an adaptation of Freaky Monday, which was co-written by Mary Rodgers, the author of — you guessed it — Freaky Friday. (Great stories. Not so big on the creative titles, I guess.)

Unsurprisingly, Freaky Monday is about another body switcheroo between a kid and an adult. This time, it’s totally uptight 13-year-old Hadley and her free-spirited teacher, Ms. Pitt.

Sounds like the premise for a great film! Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait a looooooooooooooooong time before it hits theaters. No word yet on casting, director, or release date.

Luckily, in the meantime, there are plenty other book and movie options in the Freaky family to tide you over. Here’s a timeline of them all:

  • 1972: The original book Freaky Friday is published — you all know the plot of this one: Annabeth and her mom swap bodies through some magical CAH-RAZINESS.
  • 1975: A Billion for Boris (sequel to Freaky Friday) is published — this book is also about Annabeth, but her friend, Boris, plays a major role (hence the title): somehow, they get their hands on a TV that shows all the regularly-scheduled programs, but one day in advance!
  • 1976: The first movie version of Freaky Friday comes out.
  • 1982: The book Summer Switch (ANOTHER sequel to Freaky Friday) is published — this one’s pretty much the same story as the original, except it’s Annabeth’s little brother and dad who swap places.
  • 1984: A film version of A Billion for Boris comes out — for some reason, lots of movie sites list this as Billions for Boris; maybe they think he earned interest on his money over the years? (HA! I crack myself up…)
  • 1984: A TV movie version of Summer Switch comes out.
  • 1995: A TV movie version of Freaky Friday airs.
  • 2003: The newest movie version of Freaky Friday is released.
  • 2009: Freaky Monday is published.
  • Coming Soon(?): The film adaptation of Freaky Monday!

Whew! That’s a whole lot of displaced brains. And don’t even get me started on Vice Versa — the book came out in 1882(!), and there are at least eight(!) movie versions of that one! Geez, look at all those exclamation marks I just used there. I said don’t get me started!

Well, I guess the good news is that you could put all these old movies together and create quite a marathon. But I’ve still got this new Happy Monday movie on my mind — to move things along, I came up with my picks for who should be cast: Chelsea Staub or Kay Panabaker as the straight-laced Hadley, and Jenna Elfman or Lisa Kudrow as the kooky Ms. Pitt. What do you think? Who would YOU cast in the film?
