WARNING: This is NOT the cover, just something I threw together for fun. Thank goodness too, because this is pretty hideous!*

Author Rick Riordan tapped into ancient Greek mythology for his Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, and now he’ll be bringing a bit of ancient Egyptian mythology to our bookshelves. Gee, I wonder what Rick Riordan’s favorite subject might have been in school! (Highlight for my guess: history. duh.)

Book publisher Disney-Hyperion has recently announced the first book in Mr. Riordan’s new series, and it’s titled: The Kane Chronicles, Book One: The Red Pyramid. Here’s the description from the press release:

When a magical accident unleashes the Egyptian gods on the modern world, siblings Carter and Sadie Kane discover that they are the only ones who can put things right. As descendants of the greatest Egyptian magicians, they must find a way to defeat the evil god Set before he can destroy them.

The Percy Jackson series is amazing, so I can’t wait! (But really, I have to. It’s not like I can break into Rick Riordan’s study and steal the manuscript. Or can I… Yeah, no.)

Anyway… So as I was saying — I can’t wait! Also, it’s early, but just throwing this out there, Mr. Riordan… perhaps a crossover series? 😉

* What’s that you say, Mr. Disney-Hyperion Publisher Man? You like my mock cover design? Yes, I would love to design the real cover of the new series! Why, of course I’ll direct the movie adaptations too! That’s so nice of you to — what? I’m in day dream land? And talking to myself? Darn it.

Ooh, I hadn’t heard that! I wonder what role he would play. As a half-blood, he might have some insights into god mentality that would help the Kanes…

I don’t think Percy is going to be in those books because on Ricks website it said that he might write another Greek mythology with some of the favorite characters!

@simran: Hee hee, you said, “oh my gods” — love it! Have you read The Demigod Files too? It’s a companion book to PJTO, set between the fourth book (The Battle of the Labyrinth) and the fifth book (The Last Olympian). I’ve read all the full books but I didn’t even know this one existed until recently — can’t wait to get my hands on it!

I just wanted to reply to your comment to Simran and say that I have the Demigod Files. Also, some of the interviews are interesting. I kind of like how the book is “meant for orientation at Camp Half-Blood”. I would like to say that Bat is a nickname for Baptiste. (I listened to your Wacky Families podcast.)

@Bat: Thanks for the scoop on The Demigod Files! And also the scoop on your name! (Also, writing @Bat makes me think of “at bat” like in baseball. Is it just me? Okay, I know, I make the worst puns ever… )

@ Michele: Has your son read the 39 Clues series? The first book is by Rick Riordan. It’s got a different feel from Percy Jackson and isn’t related to ancient mythology, but it is another fast-paced adventure series. And if your son got into tracing all the complex relationships in the Greek myths, he might enjoy getting into the tangled back story of the family in the 39 Clues books. Just a suggestion!
