Percy Jackson, From Olympus to a Theater Near You

February 12th, 2010 by

The wait is over. Back in August the first teaser trailer hit theaters, but today the full film will finally shine down from the silver screen… It’s opening day for the Lightning Thief movie, based on the first book in Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series! Oh my gods, I’m excited!

Of course, Nancy and I are planning to see the movie this weekend, and we’ll report back to you with a KidsmomoMO video review in the next week or so. But in the meantime, calling all PJTO fans — please, talk amongst yourselves! Leave a comment with your thoughts on the movie adaptation:

Whoa, go Logan Lerman -- use that Poseidan Power! (Squee!)

Haven’t seen it yet? What are you expecting? Do you think it will be faithful to the book? OR just saw the film? Post your opinion! How did it measure up? (Just be sure to put “SPOILER ALERT” at the beginning of your comment!)

Here are some of my thoughts: What’s up with the first scene in the trailer? Grover’s not wearing a hat, but I don’t see any horns! And I heard that Percy and Annabeth are already 16 years old in the movie version, so they had to push back the age of the big prophecy too, to age 21. Not sure I like that…

Agree? Disagree? The comments are now open for demigod discussion!

And be sure to check out these reviews for Book 2 and Book 4 in the Percy Jackson series, sent in by Sydney (age 12) and Christian (age 11)!

They changed EVERYTHING! It was kinda disappointing…

@Hahaha me: Just got home from seeing the movie, and I agree that there were SO many differences from the book! But I thought it was mostly a good adaptation. Plus, I’m a Logan Lerman fan. 🙂 Anyway, which change from the book bothered you the most?

This may be considered a spoiler alert. I’m not sure.
@Karen:Probably that they really left out the main point of the series (the war between Kronos and the gods). Also, it was annoying that they left out Ares and Clarisse. How could they cut out Clarisse?

Also, what is Persephone doing the Underworld in summer?

@Hahaha me: Good point! Although maybe it’s not summertime in the movie. It seems like Percy just up and leaves during the school year. But you’re right — it’s definitely not winter!

        Maybe it’s fall!

No pit of tartarus scene with the flying shoes! (I made sure not to make a spoiler.)

Yeah, there was definitely a lot of Underworld stuff missing from the movie. I bet that would have taken a lot of CGI!

        Yes, they did.

That is, yes, they did leave out a lot of underworld parts.

Wasn’t he supposed to uncap his pen-sword in the book?

I was so sad. They left out everything about Kronos. They acted like Luke was acting on his own, there was no Clarisse, Cerebus, or Ares, Persephone was in the Underworld (she wasn’t during the book) during summer, the flying shoes weren’t cursed, there was no Oracle, the cabins weren’t cabins, oh, I could go on and on.

And isn’t Grover supposed to be really dorky?
And isn’t Annabeth supposed to have blond hair and gray eyes?
The camp was so wood-sy. I didn’t think that a wood filled the entire place.
      Where was Thalia’s pine?

I know! Where is the pine tree?

By the way, that was a joke.

We think that the book is awesome, and the movie…isn’t awesome. Yes, feel free to speak your opinion about us being movie critics. We’ll speak ours.
(Bat, you might say it was a joke that you called us movie critics. I don’t take offense; we are.)

Jacob: I don’t want to totally jump on you. I personally think the movie was bad. You think it’s good. It wasn’t just made for me–it was mad for everyone. So…yeah, have I made my point?
