A Mango-Shaped Space: Book Review

April 22nd, 2014 by

a-mango-shaped-spaceIf you’ve read Pseudonymous Bosch’s Secret Series, then you’ve already heard of synesthesia, a brain condition that causes people to mix up their senses. For example, they might see lines in the air when they hear music, or they might associate certain numbers with certain colors.

In the Pseudonymous Bosch books, synesthesia is just one part of a crazy adventure. But in A Mango-Shaped Space by Wendy Mass, it’s the whole focus.

Mia has synesthesia, but it’s never been diagnosed before, so she’s gone through life feeling like she must be crazy — until she starts learning that there’s a scientific reason why her brain works like it does. AND there are other people like her!

Suddenly, a whole world opens up to Mia. But will it be at the expense of her existing life and relationships? Things are different in her family now, and also there’s tension with Mia’s best friend. At least Mia’s always got her cat, Mango.

I recommend this book to fans of Wendy Mass’ other books, such as Jeremy Fink and the Meaning of Life and the Willow Falls series. But I think anyone who enjoys realistic fiction about friends and family will enjoy A Mango-Shaped Space.

Have you read it yet? If you have, let me know in the comments! And I’m curious: Have you heard of synesthesia before?

— Karen

Karen learned about synesthesia in high school science class. She’s always thought it sounded awesome, but this book showed her the challenges it can cause, alongside the cool parts.

This seems like a good book from the reviews. I love cats, so when I saw this book, I was like, this probably has to do with cats. I think I will like it even though i haven’t read this book yet.

It does not have a lot to do with cats
