History Re-Written: Books from Alternate Universe POVs

July 22nd, 2014 by

What if… in an alternate universe (because those totally exist), there are books written from the perspectives of other characters in our favorite tales? In most books, there are secondary, supporting characters who are stuck on the sidelines — what’s their deal? And what if in another universe, the White Witch and Voldemort were actually tragic heroes, taken down by meddling children?

Look, the Dark Lord is smiling. He can't be that bad, right?

Look, the Dark Lord is smiling. He can’t be that bad, right?

Okay, that seems unlikely. The White Witch and Voldemort are probably evil no matter what upside-down universe we’re in. But still… here are some characters who might have appreciated history re-written:

Nellie Oleson
On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Nellie was a brat, and Laura saw through her smug smile and golden curls. But perhaps in an alternate universe… Nellie Oleson didn’t really mean to be a bully. Maybe she secretly wanted to be friends with Laura but resorted to Mean Girl tactics in order to keep her social standing in the little red school house. She didn’t deserve to be tricked into wading into a creek full of leeches. No one deserves that.

Any Human Being
Warriors series by Erin Hunter
Imagine Mr. Human Being is in his kitchen, washing the dishes. He looks out the window and notices two cats slowly stalking their way towards each other. They stop, and he stops washing his plate. The dark brown tabby tom them advances and yowls. The tabby’s opponent, a lean blue-grey feline with a scar down her shoulder, hisses back as if to say, “How dare you!” Suddenly, it’s a blur of claws and fur. Mr. Human Being is very confused. Should he call animal control? This is the third time there’s been a cat fight in his backyard. He’s beginning to think something’s going on…

Bruno Jenkins
The Witches by Roald Dahl
WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD! GO READ THE AWESOME BOOK THE WITCHES FIRST!
Ah, poor Bruno. After he was turned into a mouse by the Grand High Witch, his parents didn’t care and he barely even noticed himself. If only Roald Dahl had written a sequel continuing the adventures of Bruno living out his life as a mouse in the hotel, avoiding the exterminators.

Julian Chapter RJ PalacioJulian
Wonder by R.J. Palacio
Not to let another bully off the hook (because bullying is not okay, obviously) — but how much of Julian’s bad attitude comes from his parents? What is his home life like? We can only hope that a story written from Julian’s POV would show glimmers that Julian might be his own kinder and better person deep inside.
Bonus: You can find out what Julian was thinking all this time — in the companion short story, The Julian Chapter (currently only available as an ebook), where R.J. Palacio finally shares the perspective of Julian, Auggie’s bully.

Draco Malfoy
The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
We’ve explored how the series would be titled if Argus Filch, Severus Snape, or Narcissa Malfoy were the main characters. But what about Draco, everyone’s favorite Slytherin snob whom we love to hate? Draco may have been just a spoiled jerk in his early Hogwarts years, but as the series went on, he became a tortured young wizard with his dad, Death Eaters, and the Dark Lord breathing down his neck. We definitely want to read his diary.

So, would you have given Draco’s school journal a chance? Leave a comment below and let us know if there’s a supporting character you’d like to see as the main character of a book re-written!

I always thought that the REAL Nellie Olsen was probably not that bad a person but at some point ran afoul of Wilder and is therefore immortalized as being mean. But it would be an interesting book. I like the Donna Jo Napoli fair tale retellings from the other POVs.
