I Kill the Mockingbird: Book Review

I Kill the Mockingbird_Paul AcamporaIf you’re reading this blog, you’re probably a fan of books. AWESOME. Because I’ve got a book recommendation that’s perfect for kids who are fans of books — I Kill the Mockingbird by Paul Acampora. (That’s right, “I”, not “To.”)

In the little town of West Glover, Connecticut, Lucy Jordan has a lot to think about this summer: Her mom has just returned home from the hospital after a miraculous recovery from cancer. She starts high school in the fall. Her friend, Elena, just pointed out to her that she has a crush on Michael, and it might be a mutual crush. And her favorite teacher, Mr. Robert “Fat Bob” Nowak, died right next to her in the lunch line after telling her to not be afraid of anything.

It’s because of Mr. Nowak that Lucy loves Harper Lee’s classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Lucy has read the book so many times that she can recite passages from it, and she doesn’t get why other kids wouldn’t love this book. As usual, it’s on their summer reading list — but no one seems excited about it. So she and her friends decide to start a secret viral campaign to get other people to read this book. So what’s the best way to get someone to do what they don’t want to do? Tell them they can’t do it!

Lucy, Michael, and Elena embark on a summer-long journey to become literary terrorists — they’ll hide away (but not steal) as many copies as they can of To Kill a Mockingbird in bookstores and libraries. But what happens when their mission gets out of control? After all, Michael’s mom is a police officer and Lucy’s dad is the school principal. They could be sent to jail — or detention — for life!

Have I mentioned that this is literally the perfect book for summer reading? And it’s not just because it’s about Lucy, Michael, Elena, and their summer reading agenda. I Kill the Mockingbird is amusing, thoughtful, and at times a little ridiculous, but that’s all part of the fun!

Bonus Fact: Other books that reference To Kill a Mockingbird, because it’s one of the best books ever:  Mockingbird, Also Known As Harper, Sure Signs of Crazy, and A Summer of Sundays.

icon_nancyNancy, like Lucy, also loves To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee — she even has a giant poster of the classic cover in her bedroom.
