Kidsmomo Bloopers & Outtakes
Apr 1st, 2011 by Kidsmomo

Happy April Fools’ Day! Last year, we tricked the whole world into thinking that J.K. Rowling had another Harry Potter book up her sleeve. Okay, fine, we tried to trick the world and the world was a little smarter than we gave it credit for…

So this year, we’re playing it straight — which is a rare occurrence for us, as you’ll find when you listen to this special April 1st KidsmomoMo: a blooper reel from our podcast recording sessions!

Download the MP3

Yes, we truly are fools, but at least you get some entertainment out of it, right? :-)

— Happy Humor Month from Karen and Nancy

Voyage of the Dawn Treader Movie Review
Dec 20th, 2010 by Kidsmomo

It’s the final trip to Narnia for the Pevensie children in the new movie The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, based on the book by C.S. Lewis. And it’s certainly an amazing adventure for THEM — but is it worth the journey for YOU, the moviegoer? Nancy and Karen aren’t so sure…

Watch our video review to find out what we liked and what we didn’t like, and whether we’d recommend climbing aboard — or jumping ship:

(PS – If you’re on the go — say, sailing the seas of a magical kingdom — don’t worry, you can still listen to our review. Just download the audio.)

Have you seen the new Narnia movie? Leave a comment with YOUR review! How do you think it compared to the book and the earlier films?

Video Interview with “Joey Fly” Creators
Dec 12th, 2010 by Kidsmomo

What happens when you put together an author who’s obsessed with bugs and an illustrator who’s inspired by Where’s Waldo? Why, a graphic novel series about a crime-solving fly, of course!

Okay, maybe that wasn’t the most obvious answer — but it’s what happened! To be more exact, you get the Joey Fly, Private Eye books, written by Aaron Reynolds and illustrated by Neil Numberman. As you may recall, Nancy named Joey Fly Book 1 (entitled Creepy Crawly Crime) as her pick for our More Mysteries theme. The second book, Big Hairy Drama, just came out last month.

So, now we have another question for you: what happens when you put together the creators of Joey Fly, Private Eye and the crazy minds behind Kidsmomo (that would be Karen and Nancy)? Why, a video interview, of course! (Hopefully, you got that one right — it’s the title of this post, after all…)

(PS – If you’re on the go — say, solving mysteries and avoiding spiderwebs — don’t worry, you can still listen to our interview with Aaron Reynolds and Neil Numberman. Just download the audio.)

Have you read either of the Joey Fly books? Leave a comment telling us what you thought!

Deathly Hallows Part 1 Movie Review
Nov 24th, 2010 by Kidsmomo

Raise a glass of Butterbeer, because Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 has finally hit theaters! And it made a whopping $125 million over opening weekend (we assume the money was quickly converted to Galleons and is now being stored safely at Gringotts).

Did the film deserve to make that much? Did it live up to the hype? And most importantly, did it live up to the book? Watch our video review to find out!

(PS – If you’re on the go — say, scouring the countryside for little pieces of Voldemort’s soul — don’t worry, you can still listen to our review. Just download the audio.)

Have you seen the movie? Leave a comment with YOUR review! We’d love to hear your responses to the seven questions we answered in our review:

  1. So… what did you think of the movie overall?
  2. What was your favorite part of the movie?
  3. Was there anything you didn’t like about the movie?
  4. Which scene were you most excited to see? (And did it live up to your expectations?)
  5. Is there anything in the movie that’s not in the book that you really enjoyed — or disliked?
  6. Will people who haven’t read the book enjoy this movie?
  7. How are you going to stay sane until Part 2 comes out?

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole Movie Review
Oct 10th, 2010 by Kidsmomo

The new movie Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole really SOARED opening weekend, coming in at #2 at the box office. But did the story — adapted from Kathryn Lasky’s Guardians of Ga’Hoole book series — really FLY on the big screen? Was it a HOOT? Or is it FOR THE BIRDS? And just how many owl puns can we fit into this paragraph?

Lucky for you, that paragraph is over — so we’re done with the bad jokes and now you can watch our video review of Legend of the Guardians. (Be sure to stay tuned until the end for a rousing game of Owl or Cheese!)

(PS – If you want to listen to our review ON THE FLY, you can download the audio. Sorry, couldn’t resist one more bird pun…)

Flipped Movie Review
Sep 5th, 2010 by Kidsmomo

Bryce and Juli, sittin' in a tree... (Yeah, we're immature. What of it?)

Juli hearts Bryce. But Bryce hates Juli. OR DOES HE? If you’ve read the book Flipped by Wendelin van Draanen, then you know how their story goes — and you also know how awesome it is! Seriously, Nancy and Karen want to marry this book; we doodle hearts in the page margins while dreaming of romantic moonlit walks with this book; we call this book and then hang up when it answers. For reals.

So, of course, we could barely contain our excitement over the movie adaptation. (You may recall Karen’s giddy post announcing the upcoming film.)

And did the movie live up to our expectations? Is Flipped a hit? Or did Flipped flop? You’ll just have to watch our video review to find out:

(PS – If you’re on the go — say, climbing a sycamore tree or running away from a neighbor who wants to kiss you — don’t worry, you can still listen to our review. Just download the audio.)

Have you seen the movie? Leave a comment with YOUR review! How do you think it compared to the book?

PS – Here are links to the awesome fansite and Wendelin van Draanen’s blog, which we mention in our review. Check ‘em out!

Ramona and Beezus Movie Review
Aug 1st, 2010 by Kidsmomo

“Who could love a girl named Beezus?” Selena Gomez poses this question in the movie Ramona and Beezus, which opened last weekend. And here’s our answer: WE could — and we do!

Both Karen and Nancy left the theater with huge grins on their faces, and much love for both Quimby sisters — but especially Joey King as the irrepressible Ramona. Why? Well, you’ll have to tune into our video review to find out:

(PS – If you’re like Ramona and would rather use your imagination, feel free to skip the visuals and download the audio.)

Kidsmomo Does Lolcats
Jun 19th, 2010 by Kidsmomo

O hai. You knew it was unavoidable. Our current theme is cats, so how could we resist doing a KidsmomoMO video in LOLspeak? Answer is: we couldn’t.

Of course, the feline characters in our cat book recommendations don’t all care about cheezburgers, so tune in to see what these kidlit kitties would say if they were lolcats:

Kidsmomo Pictionary, Round 4!
May 31st, 2010 by Kidsmomo

Yes, our current theme is war stories in honor of Memorial Day — but that doesn’t mean we’re not setting aside time for some fun and games this holiday weekend. And you know what that means? Probably not, but we’re gonna tell you: it’s time for another round of KidsmomoMo Pictionary!

If you watched Round 1, Round 2, or Round 3 of our competition, then you know the drill: all the answers are titles from our booklists for past themes, and Karen is consistently humiliated by her lack of drawing skills. But will she turn things around in Round 4? You’ll have to watch to find out!

So tune in and play along! How many titles can YOU guess?
