Long-time visitors to Kidsmomo know that I’m a HUGE scaredy cat. I’m not afraid to admit it — and that’s probably the only thing I’m not afraid of. Ghosts? The devil? Even a regular old action movie has me biting my fingernails. So you’re probably wondering how I can recommend a book called A Monster Calls…
Well, A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness is not that kind of horror story. Yes, Conor is visited every night by a gigantic monster that peers into his bedroom window and won’t let him escape. Yes, the monster seems to be empowering Conor to be surprisingly destructive and angry. But this is not really a spine-tingling chiller.
You see, Conor’s mom has cancer, and she’s very very sick. And somehow, the monster’s appearance has something to do with that. Can the monster cure her? It certainly has a message for Conor, related to his mom. Now it’s up to Conor to figure it out.
Beware: you probably won’t quiver from fear when you read this, but you may cry a little. It’s a serious topic, and although there are some slightly funny moments, it’s a pretty serious book overall. But that doesn’t mean it’s not enjoyable! Don’t believe me? Maybe the opinion of thousands of kids will convince you! Recently, A Monster Calls won won the Red House Children’s Book Award in England, based on the votes of readers around your age!
Also, the illustrations are completely AWESOME! Look at that spooky, gloomy cover up there; that’s just a fraction of what you’ll find inside the book. Assuming you pick it up. Which you definitely should. Obviously.
Karen is such a scaredy cat, she even got nervous watching Finding Nemo. There was a lot of potential uncharted danger in the open ocean, okay?
