Hugo Movie Review

December 2nd, 2011 by

hugo-movie-posterLike the station inspector chasing after Hugo, or Hugo and Isabelle seeking out the answer to a mystery, last week Nancy and Karen went in search of a magical movie experience… We saw Hugo, based on the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick!

And did the movie deliver? To find out, you’ll just have to watch the video review below! You know, just like Hugo and Isabelle watching a film, or — oh, forget it, let’s just get to the review:

(PS – If you’re on the go — or busy winding the clocks at the local train station — don’t worry, you can still listen to our review. Just download the audio.)

Have you seen the new movie Hugo? Leave a comment with YOUR review! How do you think it compared to the book? And what do you think: do you need to know the book already in order to enjoy the film?

Brian Selznick Live! (WONDERSTRUCK Launch Party)

September 15th, 2011 by

This week I was lucky enough to go to a launch party for Brian Selznick’s new book Wonderstruck, which I raved about in our Fall Preview themed podcast.

The party was held at the NYC bookstore Books of Wonder, which got a bit of a makeover for the night and became Books of Wonderstruck!

Check out this awesome display in the window of the bookstore — if you don’t quite understand what’s there… well, I recommend picking up a copy of Wonderstruck. 🙂 After you finish reading this, of course.

The event itself was even more awe-inspiring than the window display! Brian Selznick did an audio/visual presentation, answered questions from the audience, and signed copies of his books. And the whole thing was interpreted by a professional American Sign Language interpreter, which was fitting because some of the characters in Wonderstruck are deaf.

Of course, all of this made me even more excited for Hugo, the upcoming film adaptation of Brian Selznick’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabret!

Have you picked up (the very heavy) Wonderstruck yet? If so, send in a review to be featured on the Kidsmomo podcast or leave a comment!

Nancy was too busy watching the presentation to eat. Her mission next time she visits Books of Wonder is to get a snack from their cafe!
