Okay, I know I’m about a gazillion years behind, but I just read The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau, and IT WAS AWESOME! Why don’t people talk more about this book? Seriously, why?
For those of you who are just as out of it as me and haven’t read The City of Ember yet, you absolutely MUST. It will grab you right from the start.
In this sci-fi world, all the inhabitants live in a dark city surrounded by nothingness — at least as far as anyone knows. Some have tried to explore in the Unknown Regions, but no one makes it very far into the uncharted blackness before giving up and returning to Ember. Still, people keep trying because the city is steadily running out of food and supplies, and the blackouts are getting longer and more frequent.
Twelve-year-old Doon is determined to do something to fix the situation, and he’s hopeful that his new job in the underground Pipeworks system will give him that chance. His classmate, Lina, isn’t as concerned — until she comes across a mysterious ancient letter that could hold the key to a new world. Together, can Lina and Doon discover a way out of Ember?
Obviously, I’m not going to tell you the answer here! You’ll just need to read the book and see!
And even if you have a guess what happens, go ahead and check out the book anyway; the world of Ember is fascinating and described so vividly, I was transported there instantly — and though the characters wanted a way out, I was happy to explore!
Have YOU read the book (or seen the movie)? Or read any of the other books in the series? Leave a comment and tell me your thoughts!
