Pictionary with the Professionals

Six artists. One sharpie. Many sheets of paper. Get ready for…

Low-Stakes-Pictionary-Bookstore-Poster

Last week, six graphic novelists gathered to play Pictionary at McNally Jackson Bookstore in New York City. The contestants:

  • Jarrett J. Krosoczka (Lunch Lady series, Platypus Police Squad series, Punk Farm series)
  • Raina Telgemeier (Smile, Drama, Sisters)
  • Kazu Kibuishi (Amulet series, the new Harry Potter book covers)
  • Sara Varon (Robot Dreams, Bake Sale, Odd Duck)
  • Frank Cammuso (The Misadventures of Salem Hyde series, The Knights of the Lunch Table series)

Left to Right: McNally Jackson Bookstore Bookseller & Pictionary Host, Sara Varon, Raina Telgemeier, and Jarret J. Krosoczka

Authors-2

Left to Right: Kazu Kibuishi, Frank Cammuso

We made sure to attend and get front-row seats so we could report back to our Kidsmomo readers. Okay, technically Nancy got a second-row seat and Karen was in the fifth row, but the space was pretty small, so we still got good views of the action.

The graphic novelists were first split into two teams. At first they guessed for their own teams, and eventually the crowd joined in! The answers were book titles, nouns, or common idioms. Can you guess what they are? (Click on the link below each picture to reveal the answer!)

Amulet is a graphic novel by Kazu Kibuishi. This book is a bout a girl named Emily who found an Amulet. Also, she and her brother try to give their mom. From a poison monster. My favorite part is when a giant elf fights a walking house. I recommend this book to anyone who likes action and graphic novels.

Explorer: The Lost Islands – Book Review

October 8th, 2013 by

explorer-lost-islandsQ: What do you get when you take seven comic illustrators/graphic novelists and throw them in the ocean?

A: Explorer: The Lost Islands!

Edited by Kazu Kibuishi, it’s a collection of short stories in comic style, with each story taking place on a fantastical island you won’t find on any map (except in your imagination).

All the artists’ styles are really different from each other, so Explorer: The Lost Islands is a total visual treat. Also perfect for people with short attention spans!

My personal favorite stories are: “Carapace” by Jason Cafoe, “The Mask Dance” by Chrystin Garland, and “Radio Adrift” by Katie Shanahan and Steven Shanahan.

“Carapace” follows the adventures of a boy who wakes up on a strange island and befriends the ghost spirit of a ginormous crab that died and can’t find peace. (It’s much funnier and more light-hearted than it sounds.) “The Mask Dance” is about an exotic carnival that turns spooky. And “Radio Adrift” is about a mage in training who discovers that a radio DJ is the key to hatching her magical egg.

explorer-mystery-boxesBtw, did you know that editor Kazu Kibuishi did all the illustrations for the new Harry Potter book covers that just came out? So he knows what he’s doing!

If you ended up on a desert island, what would you bring with you? And what would you want the island to be like? Leave a comment and let me know!

And if you like  Explorer: The Lost Islands, also check out Explorer: The Mystery Boxes!

— Karen

Karen would bring a personal sushi chef to a desert island. And some good books, of course!

Do you like a book that is mysterious? Then you might want to read Amulet by Kazu Kibushi.

In this book there is a girl named Emily and her dad was driving Emily to go pick up her brother Navin but, her dad drove off a cliff in their car. Emily and her mom survived and they moved to a new house with Navin. They found out Emily’s uncle had a magic amulet that Emily took and tried to use the amulet. Once she tried the amulet a couple of times Emily heard a noise down in the cellar. On her way down, she saw a monster attacking and running away with Emily’s mother. Will they get Emily’s mother back from the monster?
I recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery books, graphic novels, and fantasy books.
