Six artists. One sharpie. Many sheets of paper. Get ready for…

Last week, six graphic novelists gathered to play Pictionary at McNally Jackson Bookstore in New York City. The contestants:

  • Jarrett J. Krosoczka (Lunch Lady series, Platypus Police Squad series, Punk Farm series)
  • Raina Telgemeier (Smile, Drama, Sisters)
  • Kazu Kibuishi (Amulet series, the new Harry Potter book covers)
  • Sara Varon (Robot Dreams, Bake Sale, Odd Duck)
  • Frank Cammuso (The Misadventures of Salem Hyde series, The Knights of the Lunch Table series)

Left to Right: Kazu Kibuishi, Frank Cammuso

We made sure to attend and get front-row seats so we could report back to our Kidsmomo readers. Okay, technically Nancy got a second-row seat and Karen was in the fifth row, but the space was pretty small, so we still got good views of the action.

The graphic novelists were first split into two teams. At first they guessed for their own teams, and eventually the crowd joined in! The answers were book titles, nouns, or common idioms. Can you guess what they are? (Click on the link below each picture to reveal the answer!)

Kidsmomo Pictionary, Part 9

October 24th, 2012 by

What are you gonna be for Halloween? Here’s one thing Karen would like to be: a great artist! Sadly, if you’ve watched any of our past rounds of KidsmomoMo Pictionary, then you know this would be a HUGE stretch — even for a Halloween costume. Alas.

But if you’ve missed previous rounds of our competition, here’s how it works: all the answers are titles of books we’ve recommended on Kidsmomo in the past. Now watch Part 9 and play along! How many titles can YOU guess?

And here’s a running tally of Correct Guesses:

Part Karen Nancy
I 5 1
II 3 0
III 1 3
IV 2 2
V 1 1
VI 3 1
VII 3 0
VIII 1 0
IX 3 1
Total: 21 9

Kidsmomo Pictionary, Part 7

It’s October! Time for pumpkins, costumes, candy, and things that go bump in the night! In that spirit, we have a super frightening video for you today. Why’s that? Well, nothing’s scarier than Karen’s horrible attempts at so-called “drawing” when we play KidsmomoMo Pictionary!

If you’ve missed any previous rounds of our competition, here’s how it works: all the answers are titles of books we’ve recommended on Kidsmomo in the past. Watch Part 7 and play along! How many titles can YOU guess?

And here’s a running tally of Correct Guesses:

Part Karen Nancy

Kidsmomo Pictionary, Part 6!

August 16th, 2012 by

The Olympics may be over (boo hoooooo), but the games still go on! If by “the games,” you mean our ongoing game of KidsmomoMo Pictionary, that is…

If you’ve missed any previous rounds of our competition, here’s how it works: all the answers are titles of books we’ve recommended on Kidsmomo in the past, and Nancy repeatedly trounces Karen. I mean, she really stomps all over Karen. She COMPLETELY puts Karen to shame. You get the picture.

Can Karen break the cycle in Round 6? Watch and find out — and play along! How many titles can YOU guess?

And in case anyone is curious about how who’s winning, here’s a running tally of Correct Guesses:

Part Karen Nancy
I 5 1
II 3 0
III 1 3
IV 2 2
V 1 1
VI 3 1
Total: 15 8

Kidsmomo Pictionary, Part 5!

August 9th, 2012 by

It’s been a while since we’ve played KidsmomoMo Pictionary — not just because Karen needed all that time to get over the humiliation of her poor attempts at drawing!

If you’ve watched any previous rounds of our competition, then you know how it goes: all the answers are titles of books we’ve recommended on Kidsmomo in the past, and Karen consistently freezes up in anguish because she has no artistic skills whatsoever.

Will the pattern continue in Round 5? Watch and find out! And, of course, please play along! How many titles can YOU guess?

Kidsmomo Pictionary, Part 4!

May 31st, 2010 by

Yes, our current theme is war stories in honor of Memorial Day — but that doesn’t mean we’re not setting aside time for some fun and games this holiday weekend. And you know what that means? Probably not, but we’re gonna tell you: it’s time for another round of KidsmomoMo Pictionary!

If you watched Round 1, Round 2, or Round 3 of our competition, then you know the drill: all the answers are titles from our booklists for past themes, and Karen is consistently humiliated by her lack of drawing skills. But will she turn things around in Round 4? You’ll have to watch to find out!

So tune in and play along! How many titles can YOU guess?

Kidsmomo Pictionary, Part 3!

April 18th, 2010 by

Between How to Train Your Dragon and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Nancy and Karen have spent a lot of time sitting silently in dark movie theaters recently. So we decided it was time for a return to the fast-paced, brightly-lit world of KidsmomoMo Pictionary!

If you watched Round 1 or Round 2 of our competition, then you know that Nancy’s drawing skills pretty much stomp all over Karen’s artistic attempts, while Karen excels more where the guessing’s concerned. But what will happen in Round 3? You’ve got to watch to find out!

Okay, let’s face it, you won’t be surprised… But it’s still entertaining! So tune in and play along! All the answers are titles from our booklists for past themes. How many titles can YOU guess?

Kidsmomo Pictionary, Part 2!

January 30th, 2010 by

That’s right, folks, it’s time for the next round of KidsmomoMo Pictionary! It’s Nancy vs. Karen in another battle of epic propotions…

Well, not really. If you watched our first game, then you know it’s not exactly an even match: one of us is a talented artist, and the other has the illustration skills of a potato — and not like a lively Mr. Potato Head potato either, more like a cold, moldy lump of potato.

But tune in anyway — and play along! All the answers are titles from our booklists for past themes. How many titles can YOU guess?

Nancy v. Karen in… Kidsmomo Pictionary!

January 10th, 2010 by

It’s Game Night in the Kidsmomo household — which means it’s time for a rousing game of KidsmomoMO Pictionary!

We took turns randomly drawing titles from our booklists for past themes, and then drawing as many visual clues as possible within a one-minute time limit. Who got the most correct answers? Whose doodles saved the day? And how many titles can YOU guess? Well, one thing’s for certain — after you watch this video, it will be very obvious which one of us does the Mystery Book Theater illustrations!

So, what are you waiting for? Watch the video and play along:
