Breaking Book News: Lemony Snicket’s New Series

August 31st, 2009 by

I don’t know about you, but I was heavily involved in Lemony Snicket‘s research into the mystery surrounding the Baudelaire orphans. And when I say “heavily involved,” I mean that I diligently studied everything I could related to their tragic circumstances — all 13 books in A Series of Unfortunate Events, plus The Unauthorized Autobiography of Lemony Snicket and The Beatrice Letters. Perhaps you suspect that’s a Very False Declaration? Just check out my bookshelf, o ye of little faith:

My unfortunate bookshelf

My unfortunate bookshelf

(Yes, I know Books 2, 3, and 13 are missing. They seem to have vanished! But what else would you expect from this series?)

After all the blood, sweat, and tears I put into [reading about] tracking down the truth about the Baudelaires, I have to admit that I was a little disappointed when I finished the final book and still had so many unanswered questions. So imagine my joy at learning that Lemony Snicket is writing a new series! Yes, that’s right, a brand new book series from the world’s most enigmatic author!

The Bad Beginning, the first book in A Series of Unfortunate Events

The Bad Beginning, the first book in A Series of Unfortunate Events

Unfortunately, Snicket isn’t divulging many details at the moment. In a statement, he said:

“I can neither confirm nor deny that I have begun research into a new case, and I can neither confirm nor deny that the results are as dreadful and unnerving as A Series Of Unfortunate Events.”

Thanks a lot, Lemony, that’s really illuminating.

I did learn that there will be four books in the series and that the first installment will be published in Britain in 2012. But what’s the series about? When will it come to America? Will it reveal any secrets about VFD? Apparently, when it comes to these questions, the world is quiet here.

Even the British company that’s publishing the series refuses to reveal any details:

“Usually, I look forward to opening my post. It’s exciting to think that I might find a manuscript to bring comfort and joy to any reader. But that morning, when I saw the handwriting on the envelope — well, how would you feel if you knew you were about to unleash yet more untold misery on the unsuspecting children of this country? We at Egmont can’t escape Lemony Snicket’s grim story.”
— Egmont publisher, Leah Thaxton

“As if the recession weren’t bad enough, now British readers have the threat of a new series from Mr Snicket hanging over them. As a responsible publisher, of course we shall put all our efforts into ensuring no child is exposed to yet more misery from Mr Snicket’s investigations.”
— Director of Egmont Press, Cally Poplak

People, can’t we just get a straight answer?! Grrr…

So, to re-cap: Lemony Snicket may or may not have a confidential new research project, which may or may not be upsetting to the masses, and it may or may not be chronicled in books that may or may not be sold to the public. Great, just great.

And yet I’m still super excited! God, I’m such a sucker.

Me too! I just absolutely adore the Unfortunate books, I can’t wait until the new series comes out!

P.S. I heard it is supposed to be about Lemony Snicket’s life, but still unrelated to the Baudelaire orphans (Violet, Klaus, and Sunny), and it’s supposed to reveal some secrets about VFD, O and E, K, and other Volunteers/ Villains. I hope it answers some of my questions, you know, about Verbal Fridge Dialogue the Sebald Code the Hotel Deneoument etc.

Dear Karen, and others reading this comment,
You wouldn’t believe what I’ve just read! The first book in the series is supposed to come out this fall. The series [is supposed to be] called All The Wrong Questions, and will not be published by HarperCollins but by Little Brown, the publishing company plans on printing 1 million copies! Yes, it IS supposed to be very autobiographal [on Lemony Snicket’s life] if you know what I mean.

P.S. Where did you get The Beatrice Letters and The Unauthorized Autobiography? And is that a hardcover copy of The Unauthorized Autobiography? Please answer!

Hi, Violet! (Or is that a pen name, like “Lemony Snicket”?) It’s awesome that you are such a big Baudelaire fan! I got The Beatrice Letters and The Unauthorized Autobiography years ago, back when they first came out. That’s why I have the hardcovers. They are definitely prized possessions of mine. 🙂

Thank you for replying so quickly! I was just wondering, because the Barnes And Noble here doesn’t have the Unauthorized Autobiography in hardcover, and it doesn’t have The Beatrice Letters at all (isn’t that outrageous?)! You’re so lucky to have them. I couldn’t get The Beatrice Letters because mother didn’t have the $20 plus tax… Oh, and yes, Violet is a pen name, I just love that name, don’t you? Have you seen the movie?

Found some info, check it out:

Today Little Brown for Young Readers announced that Lemony Snicket aka Daniel Handler has a new series to be released in October.

Who Could That Be at This Hour? is the first in the “autobiographical” All the Wrong Questions series, which will explore Snicket’s youth “in a fading town, far from anyone he knew or trusted.”  The novel will be released in hardcover, audio and e-book simultaneously with a one million first print run.

    From Publishers Weekly:

“We are thrilled to be publishing this compelling new series by Mr. Snicket, which will at long last reveal the renowned author’s mysterious past,” said Little, Brown BFYR senior v-p and publisher Megan Tingley in a statement. Snicket’s characteristically acid remark on the new series: “These books are questionable and contain questions. I, for one, question why anyone would be interested in reading them.”

    Hello, Karen,
I just wanted to know if you’d found out the exact date that Who Could That Be At This Hour would come out? I haven’t been able to figure that bit out… But I did write to Mr. Snicket asking him about it. Considering how you didn’t get a straight answer, I said to please give me a straight answer, I also asked for an autographed photo to be sure I got a reply…

All the Wrong Questions is a forthcoming four-part children’s series and prequel to A Series of Unfortunate Events by American author Lemony Snicket (pen name of Daniel Handler). Snicket signed with Egmont Publishing (UK) in August 2009[1] and Little, Brown and Company (U.S.) in November 2009[2] to begin working on the series. Although Snicket has switched from his former publisher, HarperCollins, to Little, Brown and Company, he will continue to work with his longtime editor Susan Rich.[3] The first book, Who Could That Be at This Hour?, is set for release on October 23, 2012.[4] The series will explore Snicket’s (a fictional character in the series) childhood at the V.F.D. and elaborate on the Great Unknown.

In August 2009, it was announced that Egmont Publishing had purchased the rights to a new series by Snicket.[5] By November 2009, Little, Brown and Company had purchased the North American rights to the series.[2] The series will have some overlap with his previous series, A Series of Unfortunate Events, but will not involve its protagonists, the Baudelaire orphans.[6]Daniel Handler, the author behind the Snicket pen name, clarified that the series “is mostly an entirely new story. But if you are a close reader of the series you will see some overlap. There will be something for people who are hungry for that sort of thing.”[7] He reiterated: “It does have some overlap with the series, but it’s not a continuation.”[8]

Asked about his progress with the series in January 2010, Handler stated that he was “at the point that it’s a twinkle in someone else’s eye.”[9] He told The Scotsman that the series was “still kind of fetal”, and that he would be writing it in 2010.[8]The Times reported he is playing with a plot and title.[7] The only hint to the story’s plot provided by Handler was that the series will “approach that question mark from a different angle”,[7] a possible reference to the mysterious entity appearing in the eleventh and thirteenth novels of A Series of Unfortunate Events. In October 2010, Snicket elaborated:

I’m doing research for a new series for older children that is about more experiences from my own life; it takes place at a time before the Baudelaire children were born.[10]

On February 8, 2012 the name of the series was revealed, All The Wrong Questions, along with the first book’s title, Who Could That Be At This Hour?. The series is to follow Lemony Snicket’s childhood in “an organization nobody knows about”.[11] The first book has been given a first printing of one million copies and will be released October 23, 2012.[4] The title of the first book had earlier been hinted at in a message to fansite 667 Dark Avenue, where it was apparently designated as “The First Question”.[12]

Reading this page made me really happy. I can still remember when I saw the film and when I bought the first book of the serie and when I decided to buy them all. I grew up with “A series of Unfortunate Events”, with Violet, Klaus and Sunny and I’m so annoyed because here in Italy these books are not going to be published: I could not read “Letters to Beatrice” and I could not discover the other Lemony Snicket’s secrets. What a pain!

The next book in the All the Wrong Questions series is called When Did You See Her Last? and will be released on 15 October 2013, according to I’m extremely excited. (I have all thirteen books, two copies of The Blank Book, The Beatrice Letters, and am getting Who Could That Be At This Hour? from my sister as a birthday present, and plan on buying The Unauthorized Autobiography). I think I might get it for Christmas, unless I have my own money when it comes out. *overexcited right now*
