Animal Alter Egos for Book Characters

June 12th, 2011 by

Since our current theme is Multi-Animal Adventures, I started thinking… What if some of our favorite books were about animals instead of humans? Would Harry Potter be a stag like his patronus? Voldemort would definitely be a slithery snake…

So, below are my thoughts on animal alter egos for some favorite kidlit characters:

Percy Jackson and the Olympians

Percy: It’s tempting to cast him as a sea animal, but I actually see him as more of a horse. He goes from wild stallion in The Lightning Thief to a powerful leader by the end of the series.

Annabeth: The easy match would be an owl, since they’re known as symbols of wisdom. But I view Annabeth as a wily fox โ€” clever and sly, but also fiercely loyal to those who have earned her trust.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

Greg: Sorry, Greg, but you’re definitely a weasel. Who can argue that Greg is always trying to weasel his way out of trouble?

Rowley: Poor Rowley is like a dog, so loyal that he’ll put up with A LOT from his best friend, Greg.

Dork Diaries

Dork DiariesNikki: I don’t think she’d like this, but I think Nikki is kind of like a squirrel โ€” darting around to get the lay of the land (aka middle school), but trying to stay as inconspicuous as possible and get back to the nest safe and unnoticed.

MacKenzie: If Nikki is a squirrel, then MacKenzie is definitely a bird of prey. At first, I was thinking vulture, but they actually wait until animals are out of their misery before diving in. MacKenzie is way more diabolical than that, so I’m upgrading her to hawk.

So, those are my attempts to assign animal counterparts to some characters from children’s books. Do you agree? Disagree? Got ideas of your own? Leave a comment with YOUR animal alter ego ideas!

If Karen were an animal, she might be a sloth because she’s so lazy. But she’d want to be a manatee because she just loves peacefully swimming around!
