Geeks, Girls, and Secret Identities: Book Review

February 7th, 2016 by

Everyone loves the superhero. Except for villains, of course. But besides the bad guys, who isn’t grateful that Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Incredibles, and all their pals are patrolling the world and making sure we’re safe?

But what if you discovered that your favorite superhero wasn’t who you thought? What if you found out your beloved hero’s true identity was actually… your crush at school?!

geeks-girls-secret-identitiesMuch to his confusion, that’s what happens to Vincent in Geeks, Girls, and Secret Identities by Mike Jung.

Vincent is president of the unofficial Captain Stupendous fan club — not to be confused with the official fan club, which is run by total jerks. The unofficial fan club, on the other hand, consists of Vincent and his two geeky friends, Max and George. Though they may be unpopular, they do feel confident that they are the true experts on Captain Stupendous. And that’s why it makes perfect sense that Vincent’s crush, Polly, comes to them for help when she suddenly has to take over in the role of Captain Stupendous.

But can Vincent and his friends really help Polly/Stupendous defeat the newest criminal mastermind in town? Not only does Professor Mayhem seem to be strangely immune to Captain Stupendous’ fight moves, but Polly is a total newbie at this superhero thing. On the other hand, it makes for a suspenseful story!

I recommend this book for fans of the N.E.R.D. books by Michael Buckley, and fans of any of these other twisted superhero stories: Powerless by Matthew Cody, Archvillain by Barry Lyga, and Sidekicks by Dan Santat. (Check out our full list of books about “kinda superheroes”!)

If you’ve already read Geeks, Girls, and Secret Identities, leave a comment with your thoughts. Or tell everyone what your superhero name and/or powers would be!

Karen already has the power to eat way more food than most normal people, so her superhero name would probably be something like Mega Facestuffer Woman or Lady Noms…
