Pilfer Academy: Book Review

Pilfer Academy- A School So Bad It's Criminal by Lauren MagazinerIf you read all my Kidsmomo reviews back to back, I’m pretty sure you’d see some clear patterns: I love books that take place at boarding schools for special training, and I love capers. Check out my reviews for Spy School and Lawless, which combine both of those components together! And now, there’s another book to add to the list: Pilfer Academy by Lauren Magaziner!

Pilfer Academy is a boarding school where students train to be thieves. George is selected to attend — and unfortunately for him, he doesn’t have a choice in the matter. That’s because Pilfer Academy students are kidnapped and brought to the school’s top secret location, with no chance to decline the invitation.

For most students, that’s not a problem because they love their classes. And even George enjoys learning how to create a convincing disguise and construct a useful gadget.

Well, he enjoys it at first. But after a while, he starts doubting his place at the academy. Sure, he always delighted in causing trouble for his siblings and taking their things — the feats that earned him a spot at Pilfer Academy — but does that make him a true bad guy? Does he really aspire to steal the most prized possessions of unsuspecting strangers? Does he really want to ruin lives?

If you want to know what George decides and what he does next, then you’ll have to read the book! It’s full of humor and adventure, and despite the outlandish setting, it’s even got some realistic friendship/school dynamics.

Here’s a question for all of you: If you were to become a thief, what do you think your special talent would be? Would you be super stealthy? A nimble pickpocket? A great getaway car driver? Leave a comment with your answer!

Karen isn’t particularly fast or quiet, but she has pretty good observational skills, so maybe she’d make a good look-out.
