Seuss Movie News: Johnny Depp!

October 22nd, 2011 by

I bet if ten years ago, you had told someone that edgy teen heartthrob Johnny Depp would be playing beloved children’s book author Dr. Seuss, they probably would have said, “WHAAAAAAAA?!

But now Johnny Depp’s got a pretty good rep (ha ha, I made a rhyme) in the book world — he’s played Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan author J.M. Barrie, and we’ll soon see him in the upcoming adaptation of The Invention of Hugo Cabret.

For the Seuss film, Johnny Depp will be producing the movie and potentially (I think, probably) starring as Seuss himself (aka Theodor Geisel). The movie will be a live-action depiction of Seuss’ life; no word yet on whether the Cat in the Hat will make an appearance. Dr. Seuss was born in 1904 and passed away in 1991, so we’ll be seeing clothes and settings from all over the past century!

So, what do you think? Any resemblance?

In other movie news, Nancy was VERY excited to hear that the movie adaptation of Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians #2) is finally back in production 🙂 … but scheduled to release in 2013. Why. Is. The. Wait. So. Long?!!?!!? 🙁

Alice in Wonderland Trailer

August 19th, 2009 by

Has anyone watched the trailer for the Alice in Wonderland movie coming out next year? Yes? Watch it again. No? Check it out!

So I’m just going to say it — I don’t care how dreamy you think Captain Jack Sparrow is, Johnny Depp looks… frightening to me. BTW, it looks like this movie (like many other Alice adaptations) is going to include characters from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland AND its sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There. Did you guys know that Tweedledee and Tweedledum only appear in Through the Looking-Glass? I did1, and now you do too!

Also, he (it?) isn’t in the trailer, but the Caterpillar is going to be played by actor Alan Rickman (AKA PROFESSOR SNAPE!), and his face was composited onto a digital caterpillar body. I hope the nickname “Snape-pillar” catches on.

In other Alice news, I read recently that somewhere on the Internets an Alice-themed virtual world is in the works. I’m not sure how I’d feel about encountering the Mad Hatter online, but they should make more virtual worlds based on books *cough*Harry Potter*cough* &#151 what books would you want to see made into virtual worlds?

1An online “hi!” to Mrs. Corwin, who gave me my first copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and also taught me English. If she hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t have written this blog entry. Also Kidsmomo might not exist. Whoa, trippy…
