Three Times Lucky: Book Review

September 26th, 2012 by

Three-Times-Lucky-Book-ReviewWelcome to Tupelo Landing. It’s only got two streets, but in Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage, the arrival of an out-of-town detective brings a sudden burst of activity and adventure. First, there’s a murder… followed by an abrupt departure — and it’s up to two local kids to figure out what the heck is going on!

When I was trying to decide whether to read this book, I did a little checking on the interwebs and found a review calling Three Times Lucky a cross between Because of Winn-Dixie and Holes. Well, I almost spit up on myself in excitement! Hello, two of my all-time favorites! But could Three Times Lucky live up to my expectations after such a set-up? Amazingly, yes!

Mo (short for Moses even though she’s a girl) has all the spunk and heart of Opal from Winn-Dixie, and her town of Tupelo Landing has the charm and wacky cast of characters to match Winn-Dixie‘s Naomi, FL. Plus, Mo’s search for her never-known “Upstream Mother” will touch the soul of anyone who’s sympathized with Opal’s similar struggle.

On the other hand, Three Times Lucky is packed with action and mystery — and like the layers of onion that get peeled away in Holes, Mo’s investigation in this book reveals surprising twists and intertwined stories that are completely gripping.

Of course, Three Times Lucky is its own book, not just Winn-Dixie + Holes. In my humble opinion, it’s actually kind of a masterpiece — thrilling and funny and sweet and sad and just all-around AWESOME! So please check it out and let me know what you think!

And if you’ve already read Three Times Lucky, then submit a review or leave a comment with your thoughts. Did you love it as much as I did?
